Northeast Philadelphia encompasses the area between Shackamaxon and the Bucks County line and consists of two major sections, the Far Northeast and the Near Northeast.

The Near Northeast includes Burholme, Castor Garden, Crescentville, Fox Chase, Frankford, Holme Circle, Holmesburg, Juniata, Lawncrest, Lawndale, Lexington Park, Mayfair, Oxford Circle, Rhawnhurst, Ryers, Tacony, Wissinoming, and Northwood.

Within the Far Northeast are Academy Gardens, Ashton-Woodenbridge, Bustleton, Byberry, Crestmont Farms, Millbrook, Modena Park, Morrell Park, Normandy, Parkwood, Pennypack, Somerton, Torresdale, Upper Holmesburg, Winchester Park, and Krewstown.

Over 400,000 people reside in this area of Philadelphia, and the area is known for its Irish-American residents since most Irish immigrants settled in this section. More recently, the southern edges have seen an influx of Hispanics, while African Americans and Asian immigrants have also moved to this once predominantly white area of the city.

The area is primarily residential with numerous strip malls and shopping centers, as well as major industrial corporations mostly along Interstate 95.
