2nd Bank

2nd Bank
2nd Bank

The Second Bank of the United States was established in 1817, six years after the First Bank lost its charter. Located near Carpenters' Hall and Independence Square, the Second Bank was created to bolster the federal government's finances after the War of 1812 left the country in a financial bind due to inflation. Modeled after the Greek Parthenon, the impressive exterior of the building features tall white columns.

The Second Bank, despite having replaced the First Bank, was charged with corruption and election rigging by Andrew Jackson – he saw the bank as a threat to American liberty. It managed to survive its charter term until 1836, despite Jackson's efforts, but did not renew and went bankrupt five years later.

Before entering the building, visitors are treated to "Once Upon A Nation" actors dressed in traditional costumes of the time who provide music and entertainment outside. Walkways are available for those who might enjoy strolling among the rose and magnolia gardens and shaded paths. The interior of the bank houses an impressive collection of nearly 200 historic portraits of American political leaders, explorers, and other notables, including Alexander Hamilton and Patrick Henry. Many of the portraits were created by Charles Wilson Peale, for whom the gallery is named.
