On September 11, 1777, the foggy, rolling hills of Chadds Ford in Pennsylvania hosted the Battle of Brandywine, one of the largest and most significant battles of the Revolutionary War, resulting in the forced retreat of the American army. Today, Brandywine Battlefield Park carries on the legacy of this historic battle with museums containing rich artifacts and vivid commentary. One such museum depicts the Survivors of 1777 Campaign, which displays many still-standing structures illustrating the type of architecture and general quality of life during the Revolution. Also on the premises is the Benjamin Ring House, where George Washington established his headquarters the night before the notable battle, and the Gilpin House, which was looted by invading soldiers but still retains much of its original appearance.

Children of the Brandywine Valley can revel in the everyday details of life as a Revolutionary soldier at the Brandywine Battlefield Summer History Camp. At this unique and popular summer camp, six to eleven-year olds are transported back to a time of muskets and gunfire, political upheaval and three-cornered hats. The camp runs for seven weeks in the summer from 9 am to 1 pm Monday through Friday in one-week sessions.

One of the best ways to enjoy Brandywine is through a driving tour, where visitors can retrace the soldiers' steps as they passionately fought amongst the vast Chadds Ford hills in this momentous battle. But if you desire a more personal, hands-on experience, a Historic House tour leads visitors through many of the time period's authentic structures to discover what daily life was like during the Revolution. House tours are offered daily from March 18th through November.
