In the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia among six acres of manicured greenery, the stony expanse of a 19th century Victorian mansion has been home to the Woodmere Art Museum since first opening its doors in 1940. Dedicated to the appreciation and education of the artists of Philadelphia, each of the nine galleries and salons showcases a dazzling display of talent and beauty from regional artists.
More than 2500 works of art make up the Permanent Collection, complemented by eight to 12 special exhibitions each year. The Permanent Collection includes works by Daniel Garber, Thomas Pollock Anshutz, Edward Moran, Violet Oakley, Nelson Shanks, Benjamin West, and N. C. Wyeth.
The George D. Widener Studio is a converted carriage house dedicated to the artistic training of both children and adults year-round. An educational series of lectures, tours and trips functions as an outreach program into the community, drawing people back to the secluded sanctuary with a vast library and slide registry. The benefaction of Charles Knox Smith, a successful entrepreneur of humble Philadelphia beginnings, transformed his private home and extensive art collection into a museum dedicated to its community. His communal loyalty and love of art lives on today, celebrating any artist that calls Philadelphia home.
