Surrounded by picturesque rocks, ponds, trees, and traditional Japanese plants, this elegant home, built in authentic 16th- century style, is one of Philadelphia's most unique and alluring attractions. Erected in Nagoya in 1953, this majestic Japanese house was given to the City of Philadelphia and reassembled in its current form in 1958. It is now located on the grounds of Philadelphia's Horticulture Center near the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Montgomery Drive. Today, Shofuso's smooth stone pathways, old-fashioned wooden and stone bridges, and pond full of vibrant golden carp transport guests to a magical world of serenity and harmony.

The house itself, built of lightweight hinoki wood, showcases classical Japanese architecture with a roof supported by pillars, floors covered with thick tatami mats, and removable wood and paper screens that open up the layout and provide extensive views of the surrounding garden. Experience the tranquility of classical Japanese living when exploring the home's traditional kitchen, wood-fired stove, and intimate tea house. Outside, hear the gentle trickling of water and peppy chipper of birds as you wander amidst bamboo, hinoki cypress, and flowering plums. Stroll past a life-sized statue of Jizo, a Buddhist deity said to protect women and children, and an impressive stone pagoda donated by the city of Kyoto.

Shofuso also offers a beginner's course in Chanoyu, a traditional tea ceremony that encompasses many classic Japanese arts such as ceramics and bamboo weaving. Discover your spiritual side as you learn the extensive history of the tea ceremony and uncover the ancient principles of Zen. Classes are offered on Saturday morning beginning in April. Guided tours of the premises are also available for groups of three to nine guests.
