Washington Square, one of William Penn's original five city squares, is located in the city's historic district and is significant for the role it played in several dismal historic events. Originally known as Congo Square, Africans were held here before they were sold as slaves. Until the Revolutionary War, it was surrounded on three sides by woods and a prison on the fourth, and then later acted as a cemetery for both American and British Revolutionary War soldiers, as well as those who died from the yellow fever epidemic of 1793.

Currently, the square is a park with lots of shade trees, and is also the location of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
