"And B-Roy hits another three!" the announcer bursts over the loudspeaker as the Rose Garden's fans jump to their feet in support of their All-Star Trail Blazer guard, Brandon Roy. This boisterous NBA crowd is common at the Rose Garden, the primary indoor sports and entertainment arena in Portland.
Built in 1995 and seating more than 20,000, the Rose Garden is the home of Portland's only professional sports team, the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers. Housed next to the historic Memorial Coliseum in northeast Portland, the arena also acts as an entertainment venue for musical guests and other sports events, such as the Dew Action Sports Tour, a dazzling display of BMX biking and motocrossing, and World Wrestling Entertainment, a theatrical fighting show filled with scantily clad, muscular athletes. The surrounding area is commonly referred to as the Rose Garden Arena or the Rose Quarter, keeping with Portland's status as the "City of Roses."
Four concourses in all, the Rose Garden has a sports bar and grill, skybox seating, numerous terraces, and executive office space. Just outside the Rose Garden, in the commons area or One Center Court, is an Italian restaurant, a brewery, and the Blazer's team shop. Public transportation, transiting to and from points all over the city, is only a block away. In addition to its large events, the Rose Garden can accommodate more moderate-sized events in its Theater in the Clouds, a smaller arena inside that uses only the ground floor and curtained partitions to create a more intimate setting for theater acts, speakers, and smaller concerts.
