Before the current economic recession took its toll on Oregon's employment rates, thus discouraging out-of-staters from relocating, Portland held the odd distinction among U.S. cities of attracting the highest rate of individuals moving to a new city without employment. Enticed by the green hills, the West Coast living, and the city's unique vibe, they also--no doubt--found that there is a ton of free stuff to do while job hunting! In the city center Forest Park offers miles of hiking trails, the mass transit is free within the downtown areas, and the bike and pedestrian friendly nature makes it easy and cheap to navigate the museums, libraries, and art galleries- many of which host frequent events with no door charge. With a little know-how, it is easy to spend a day or a week in the city seeing the sights and experiencing all Portland has to without spending a dime.
