Sprawling across the coast of north county San Diego are the beaches of Carlsbad. Stretching from the south-end campsites to the north-end bordering Carlsbad Village are many different types of beaches to explore within a relatively small area.
Carlsbad State beach boasts plentiful sand shared by a sparse population—campers are the only residents that line these shores. Accessed by a multiple wooden staircases, the beach offers panoramic views of one of San Diego’s best beaches. Both surfing and swimming are allowed in these crystal clear waters. However, lifeguards are not always on duty so be sure to keep an eye on your little ones.
Travel just a mile north, and you’ll arrive at a lively cove across the street from the Carlsbad Power Plant (but not to worry, the water is completely clean and safe for swimming). This curved beach is a prime location for swimmers and beginning surfers due to the mild waves. The sand and sunshine is plentiful, so it is a perfect location to lie (or better yet, “stretch”) out on a warm summer day.
Less than a half-mile away is Carlsbad Village, a hub of unique shops and restaurants. So after a day spent in the water, or on the sand, take some time to wander the streets of charming downtown Carlsbad and catch an unobstructed view of the sunset from the sidewalk that lines the historic Highway 101.
