On September 28th, 1542 Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo set foot on dry land in what would become San Diego Harbor. He was the first European to explore California's coastline and discovered many of its bays and channels.

Today he still stands watch over San Diego Harbor.

On the southern end of the peninsula that partially encircles the harbor stands the centerpiece of Cabrillo National Monument, an impressive sculpture of Cabrillo. At 14 feet, the statue is an imposing reminder of his historical feat. Cabrillo's native country of Portugal commissioned the statue in 1939 and dedicated it to the U.S.

Since its dedication in 1913, Cabrillo National Monument has rewarded visitors with a mix of scenic beauty and multicultural celebration. On a clear day, the 360-degree panorama demands attention, and ranges over a vast expanse of the Pacific, across the San Diego skyline and to the rugged refuge of the Coronado Islands to the South.

Every year in late September, the Cabrillo Festival performs a reenactment of the explorer's landing at Ballast Point. Portuguese, Spanish, Mexican and Native American cultural celebrations create a dynamic atmosphere that is appetizingly punctuated by traditional food vendors.

For those seeking solitude, Cabrillo National Monument is also part of the National Park Service and offers a multitude of outdoor activities. Whether you're there for whale watching, hiking or landscape photography, Cabrillo National Monument offers something valuable for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.
