Legendary crooner Bing Crosby sang Del Mar Race Track to life with six simple words: "Where the turf meets the surf." In a time when San Diego was largely undeveloped, Crosby and friends concocted a plan to turn the balmy beachside community of Del Mar into a freewheeling summertime playground. In July 1937 Crosby, Mr. Good-Time himself, stood at the turnstile collecting tickets, smiling and shaking hands.

In 1938 a horse named Seabiscuit debuted at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and began his ascent into American folklore.

Although the track has seen changes from the days when trainers would walk their horses to the beach after each race and let them cool off in the ocean, the track at Del Mar still remains a vital part of San Diego's vibrant atmosphere. When the marine layer of late spring peels back and the sultry late June sunshine emerges, San Diegans begin smiling at the prospect of a day at the races and a meal at the track's Turf Club. Opening day is 'Hat Day,' the perfect opportunity to show off your gaudiest lid.

To keep the atmosphere lively, Del Mar presents a summer Concert Series. Shows begin after the last race of the day

The track offers a complimentary shuttle service from nearby Solano Beach, removing the hassle of parking and contributing greatly to the festival atmosphere of summertime at Del Mar.
