San Diego's Spanish Landing is the axis where generations of history intersect, where reverence for the past co-exists with a celebration of the present. Spanish Landing Park marks the site where two of the most influential Spanish voyages to California converged. Though it is unknown exactly where Father Junípero Serra of the Franciscan order and explorer Gaspar De Portolà met with their respective expedition parties, the northern coast of San Diego Harbor serves as a historical reference point. De Portolà founded the city of San Diego shortly after this meeting.
Today, the park offers ample opportunity to enjoy the city's vigorous clime. Bike paths abound, fire rings invite evening bonfires, and the pier holds bountiful fishing for anglers. In addition to the vivacity of daily activity, the park is also home to several notable events. The yearly Zydeco & Blues Festival in early May helps pave the way for summer. Contestants in the San Diego International Triathlon enjoy the rich tranquility of the park both before and after the race.
