The historically significant Whaley House in Old Town San Diego is or is not haunted by ghosts, who may or may not be friendly. The Travel Channel named the Whaley House the nation's most haunted, and numerous visitors have reported seeing ghosts. Among the reported ghosts spotted on the premises are "Yankee Jim" (James Robinson who was hanged on the grounds next to the Whaley House), Thomas Whaley, Anna Whaley, a young girl (her identity has never been verified), and even a dog that is rumored to have been the Whaley family's pet terrier.
Since opening its doors to the general public in 1960, the notorious Whaley House has piqued the curiosity of countless guests. In addition to the house itself, the fully restored Whaley House complex also contains the New Orleans Creole Café, a museum and corresponding shop, the Whaley and Crosthwaite General Store, the county's second courthouse, the city's first commercial theater, and the Verna House, home of the museum's gift shop. The complex's charming grounds feature a beautiful rose garden and replica of a rustic 19th century gazebo. The area has been designated a county park and is available to the public free of charge. Formally dedicated as a historic house museum on May 25, 1960, the Whaley House is a popular San Diego attraction.
This treasure trove of California and San Diego's past is an opportunity to learn a bit of history while maybe spotting a ghost or two roaming through the halls. Paranormal believers and skeptics alike will find much to appreciate in the Whaley House complex.
