This is one nature attraction you need a ticket for. Barrett Reservoir is unique among the San Diego lakes in that access is by reservation only in order to preserve the fish and increase the quality of the fishing experience. This lake is a “zero kill” zone, and barbless artificial lures must be used to protect the last significant indigenous population of largemouth black bass in the area. Every second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m., reservations become available on Ticketmaster for the next month. One reservation is good for four people and includes a boat and a motor (no private boats allowed). You can bring in your own engine, maximum size is 25 HP. Please note that each angler must have a valid California fishing license, which is not sold at the lake.

Barrett Lake is a simple spot in nature that provides a genuine fishing experience. There won’t be crowds. There won’t be BBQ’s, playgrounds, concession stands or even stocked fish. But there will be quiet, and perhaps the time and space for contemplation which might be what every true fisherman is really looking for.
