How can a fish with a beauty mark be such a monster? In recent years, Lake Dixon has become a place of fishing lore. In 2001, a 20 lb. 12 oz. bass was caught and identified by the large black mole on her chin. In 2003, the same bass was hooked, a colossus weighing in at almost 22lbs. In 2006, another fish was caught, this one reaching world record status at 25 lbs., and recognized as the largest bass ever hooked and boated. Yes, she had a mole, and Lake Dixon was put on the map as having the prettiest monster fish in the nation. Surprisingly, Dixon is better known for its winter trout fishing and summer nighttime catfishing, both of which can be phenomenal. But record coveters know she is out there, the luminous large-mouth Loch Ness of Dixon Lake.
Dixon offers the traditional lakeside amenities: camping with a view, boating, bird watching, and bathrooms. Hiking is excellent around the lake, with several trails that hug the lake, go into the woods, or give you a good climb up to a view. A cabin is available for people with disabilities who are not able to use regular camping facilities. It is available year round on a first come, first served basis. Please contact the Park Ranger for more information.
