Need to get up to Canada? The Pacific Crest Trail runs right through Lake Morena, but if you are not feeling up to the entire 2,500-mile trek, you can wave to the thru-hikers starting on their journey, or just join them for the day. Lake Morena is the highest (elevation 3,000 feet) of San Diego’s reservoirs; as a result the scenery changes from barren tundra to wide open mountainous ranges. Camping is available in a grove of majestic oaks, lakeside in a tent, through an RV hookup, or in a rustic wooden cabin that can include electricity and heat.

Any season is good for Lake Morena. In summer, it is one of the only lakes that allow swimming. Bring your rafting tube, personal boat, and lots of sunscreen. Fall and winter guarantee the trout are biting, and spring brings the birds (sparrows, blackbirds, California quails, hummingbirds and woodpeckers to name a few). Chances are the rest of the world will feel miles away — almost as far as Canada — once you get there.
