Lake Sutherland is well known in fishing and hunting circles, yet remains an uncongested nature spot in the Palomar Mountains. The reservoir is surrounded by Indian reservations and National Forest land, preserving the calm beauty of the desert for the enjoyment of the observant visitor. There is a tree shaded picnic area with BBQ's, and a concession stand offers snacks, bait, tackle, boat rentals, and fishing licenses. This premier fishing lake is stocked well with bass, bluegill, crappie, redear sunfish, channel catfish, blue catfish, bullhead, and carp.
Turkey hunting is allowed every year from late March to early May. Reservations are distributed via raffle, at the annual Turkey Tune up. The flock is big this year and hunters are needed. No camping is available at Lake Sutherland, but for the closest sites, check out Dos Picos County Park or William Heise County Park.
