The tranquil surface of Lake Wohlford is a deceptive veil atop the frenzied action of fish below. With 190 acres stocked with trout, largemouth bass and catfish, this spot is pure dreamland for fishermen. Private watercraft are currently banned due to the influx of Quagga mussels, but the shoreline should be sufficient for the1,500 lbs. of trout just released in February.
Nestled into the hills of Escondido, Lake Wohlford is close enough to city amenities, but still has the quiet allure of a get away. If you have caught your daily quota of fish, you can explore the Santa Rosa Mountains through miles of hikes along the reserve. Take the Gomez trail to the Ranger station for magnificent views of the area. If you are feeling adventurous and need an adrenaline kick, there is plenty of whitewater on Escondido Creek for rafting.
At the end of the day, in case you haven’t had enough fish, stop off at Lake Wohlford Café for their famous “all you can eat” catfish dinner.
