Dig in the dirt and you may find a piece of San Diego's history... or millions of pieces, which is what happened in the early 90's when various cultural anthropologists were busy discovering the rich historical significance of San Diego soil. Unfortunately, most of these artifacts ended up in boxes and basements, with no real home. The answer to the curating crisis was the San Diego Archaeological Center, a non-profit establishment created to preserve the finds and promote their educational, scientific and cultural use. The museum is dedicated to fostering an understanding of human history through research and preservation of cultural artifacts and is a nationally recognized leader in the curating of archaeological collections.
There are 17,000 archaeological sites in San Diego, and a myriad of information is available from these digs. Ceramics, tools, pictures, letters, and news accounts are on display for visitors to glimpse the secrets of previous generations. Six thousand archaeological reports are available to the public in an attempt to encourage research and advance scientific study. The Rose Canyon's geological and cultural history was recently recovered (ironically through the use of sewer archaeology) and is one of the Center's current exhibitions.
Plan to stay in the area and make a day of it. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, award-winning Orfila Winery, and San Pasqual State Historic Park are in close proximity.
