Within Balboa Park’s centrally located Casa de Balboa is the Museum of San Diego History. Simultaneously serving many purposes, the museum displays informative exhibitions, serves as the San Diego Historical Society’s headquarters, and houses the Society’s Research Library.
The museum’s collection of exhibitions showcases the Society’s interpretation of San Diego’s richly diverse history. Local life and development are presented through displays featuring artifacts, costumes, and art. Interactive components that complement the museum’s exhibitions help bring history to life. With this “hands-on” approach, the museum itself demonstrates to visitors that history is more than just a school subject.
Included in the Research Library’s collections are many paper documents such as maps, books, and architectural plans, as well as more than 2.5 million images that depict various aspects of San Diego’s past. It also houses a collection of historical objects and artifacts. The museum’s gift store sells vintage accessories, books, children’s gifts, and original works by local artists.
