The underground Lyceum Theatre below Horton Plaza produces provocative and exotic shows for curious, open-minded audiences. Through vivid works, the theater promotes a more inclusive community that embraces both progressive social and political values.
In 1986, the San Diego Repertory Theatre (REP) became Resident Manager of the Lyceum Theatre, an occasion that marked the beginning of a unique relationship between REP and the City of San Diego. Since assuming this role, REP has provided services to and collaborated with other arts and community organizations, with two-thirds of all Lyceum Theatre events co-produced by a partnership between REP and another community organization.
As San Diego's third-largest professional theater, REP entertains more than 150,000 people annually, with a whopping 350 to 400 scheduled shows. Productions are performed on one of Lyceum Theatre's two stages: the 545-seat Stage Theatre and the 270-seat Space Theatre.
REP's strong reputation is grounded in its innovative recreations of the classics. Masterpieces that have received the REP makeover treatment include Clare Booth Luce's The Women, Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire, Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, and Shakespeare's King Lear and The Merchant of Venice.
