Marie Hitchcock Theatre

Marie Hitchcock Theatre
Marie Hitchcock Theatre

Some of the best performers are made of felt, wire and buttons. At Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater, everyone from pre-schoolers to grown-ups can enjoy watching shows featuring a cast of puppets.

Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater is operated by San Diego's Balboa Park Puppet Guild, which provides workshops, apprentice opportunities, children's programs, and a year-round performance schedule. Puppet shows, appropriate for all ages, run Wednesday through Sunday at this 200-seat indoor theater.

The theater was originally part of the Palisades Building, built in celebration of the Panama Canal in 1935. After World War II, the building was divided into three sections: a theater, an arts and crafts center, and a recital hall. In 1947, the theater debuted its first public puppet show, performed by Marie Hitchcock and her sister Genevieve Engman. Engman left the theater after an injury, but Hitchcock continued to present there for almost five decades. The theater was finally named after her in 1988, just six years before her death.
