Drop into San Diego Ballet's Point Loma location to take a class, look around, and perhaps even watch the dancers rehearse a new piece. Such extreme accessibility, complemented by dance performances of the highest caliber, establishes the Ballet as an outstanding cultural resource to diverse audiences across the county.
The Ballet is closely associated with Robin Sherertz Morgan's San Diego School of Ballet and the two organizations share residence in a state-of-the-art facility. Resident choreographer Javier Velasco has created an impressive contemporary repertoire that boasts a well-balanced blend of original works and classical pieces. Some highly recognizable works include Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker and Paquita, Mendohlssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. The latter two ballets were of course inspired by and named for Shakespearean masterpieces.
The Ballet is actively involved in the greater San Diego community. This can be seen in its collaboration with other reputable local performing arts groups ranging from the San Diego Symphony, to other dance troupes such as Culture Shock. The San Diego Ballet's educational outreach program helps many K-12 students in the area and is regarded as a "model in the field." Outreach activities include approximately 44 in-school performances each year.
Shows are performed in various local venues and touring cities. Check the website for further scheduling details and ticket information.
Even if you think ballet is not for you, you'll find it hard to resist the powerful combination of expressive choreography, dramatic storytelling, romance, intricate costumes, talented dancers, and the creative use of different musical genres. Fans of classical music, the Romantic era, Patsy Cline, Duke Ellington, and everything in-between will find something to appreciate.
