The San Diego Museum of Art is pleased to be the only West Coast venue for the exhibition Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan from February 18th through May 27th, 2012. Featuring 14 objects from Xiangtangshan (pronounced "shahng-tahng-shahn") and three related Northern Qi works of art, the exhibition traces the historical origins and tragic destruction of one of the earliest and most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in China. Visitors to the exhibition will experience an immersive digital recreation of the caves.- View Event >

Get ready for a true Southern California experience! Observe hundreds of small silver fish called grunion ride the waves onto La Jolla beaches to spawn. Before hitting the beach, see grunion hatch before your eyes during a special presentation about this mysterious fish. Prepare for cool, wet conditions and bring a flashlight. Birch Aquarium Grunion Runs are set to take place 5 times from April 8th - June 6th, 2012.

New Jewelry in a New Medium - The Art of Polymer Clay will be on display at the Mingei Museum from December 17th, 2011 through June 17th, 2012. A synthetic modeling compound, polymer clay has come into its own as an art material. One of the most adaptable art mediums available, it mixes like pigment and has properties that allow it to imitate natural materials or create millefiori-type patterns as in glass. Among other things, polymer can be modeled like clay, printed like fabric and replicate numerous jewelry techniques. For many, its range seems limitless.- View Event >

To mark 20 years at its current location along Expedition Way in La Jolla, Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, is offering San Diego County residents half-off admission on the 20th of every month through the aquarium's anniversary month of September 2012.
The special deal is valid for residents living in zip codes 91901-92199. Visitors must show a valid ID with the zip code to receive the offer (limit two children per paid adult; cannot be combined with other offers). - Free Living History Events in Old Town State Park All Year Long: Through December 31, 2012

February may be museum month in San Diego but Old Town San Diego State Historic Park has more than 10 free museums open to the public year-round. These museums have ongoing living history activities every Wednesday and Saturday from 10am - 4pm to educate the public about what life was like in San Diego in the 1800s. The park also hosts free tours daily at 11am - 2pm that begin at the Robinson-Rose Visitor Center.
