Del Mar National Horse Show: April 19 - May 6, 2012

Posted in: Fairs and Festivals, Sports and Recreation, Upcoming Events

The Del Mar National Horse Show is one of the oldest and most prestigious equestrian competitions in the Western United States, and annual runs for three weeks during Spring, taking place from April 19th - May 6th, 2012 this year.

Western competition will be featured the first week, April 19-22; Dressage Week follows April 26-29; and Hunter/Jumper Week classes conclude the show May 1-6. Each has a featured Saturday evening event; Hunter/Jumper Week has featured events Friday and Saturday evening.

The Del Mar National began in 1946 as part of the annual San Diego County Fair, which happens each June at the Fairgrounds. By the late 1970s, the Del Mar National had grown so large, it outgrew the confines of the county fair and became a separate event. Western and Hunter/Jumper competition comprised the then two-week show until the early 1990s, when Dressage competition was added as a third week in the show.

Each year the show attracts more than 1,500 horses representing many breeds across three distinct disciplines. Spectators will see reining, spins, sliding stops, elegant dressage moves choreographed to music, daredevil show jumping, trick riders, comedy acts, thrills and spills, among many other exciting events.
