A "…new neighborhood between the White House and the Capitol," Penn Quarter isn't actually new, of course: it's the historic East End neighborhood often also referred to as Old Downtown, that has been revitalized and re-energized in the past decade. Now the Penn Quarter is fast becoming a major arts and entertainment district, thanks to the opening of the Verizon Center in 1997, and the subsequent establishment of new restaurants, hotels, clubs, art galleries, museums, and hip retail spots.
The Penn Quarter also boasts the new FRESHFARM Penn Quarter farmers market on 8th Street between D and E Streets. The market is open every Thursday from April through most of December from 3pm to 7pm.
