Another historic home originally owned by a relative of George Washington, the Tudor Place Historic House and Garden was built in 1816 on land purchased with an $8,000 inheritance from George Washington to Martha Custis Peter, his granddaughter. This five-acre estate is located in Georgetown’s Historic District and is officially a National Historic Landmark.

Now open to the public, Tudor Place encompasses an entirely city block on the crest of Georgetown Heights, with an excellent view of the Potomac River. The structure is a fine example of neoclassical architecture with a distinguished collection of decorative arts and a beautifully landscaped garden. The Tudor Place collection includes more than 8000 objects from the period 1750-1983, including silver, ceramics, jewelry, paintings, drawings, sculpture, photographs, manuscripts, and furniture.

The gardens are just as fabulous as the house itself, encompassing 5 ½ acres still maintained largely in the original Federal period design. In the early-19th century, an estate of this magnitude required orchards, vegetable gardens, a stable, and grazing land for cows and horses. The family expanded the grounds over several generations through to the last family owner, Armistead Peter the 3rd, who completed major projects during the mid-20th century that shaped the gardens we see today.
