Albert Einstein's contribution to science is well-known by all humankind, but the Albert Einstein Memorial at the southwest corner of the Academy of Sciences does not draw like-size crowds. It should. This 12-foot bronze sculpture of Einstein was designed by Robert Berk in the same style as the artist's famous bust of President John F. Kennedy in the Kennedy Center.
Classes and presentations are offered on a wide range of topics from drama, music, dance, and arts and crafts. Rotating exhibits and performances of various types are featured, including Azteca dance, Teatro Chicano, film screenings, exhibits, musical performances, installation art, readings, receptions and other events.
Three quotes from Einstein are inscribed on the granite bench where the figure of Einstein thoughtfully sits:
- "As long as I have any choice in the matter, I shall live only in a country where civil liberty, tolerance, and equality of all citizens before the law prevail."
- "Joy and amazement of the beauty and grandeur of this world of which man can just form a faint notion …"
- "The right to search for truth implies also a duty; one must not conceal any part of what one has recognized to be true."
The Academy of Sciences often features free art exhibits on both science related and non-science related topics.
