Arlington National Cemetery is a moving history of many of the country's accomplishments, a tribute and resting place for many who not only gave their lives in defense of the country, but who dedicated their entire careers to improving humankind.
Many of the country's greats are buried here, including two U.S. presidents, John F. Kennedy and William Howard Taft, the crew of the Challenger space shuttle, civil rights leader Medgar Evers, and chief Supreme Court justices Earl Warren, Warren Earl Burger, and William Hubbs Rehnquist. The cemetery includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with the remains of unidentified soldiers from World Wars I, II, and the Korean Conflict, commemorated by a changing of the guard ceremony. Also on the grounds is the Arlington House, the home of Robert E. Lee until the outbreak of the Civil War.
Don't miss the Women in Military Service for America Memorial that honors the more than two million women who have served in the armed forces from the American Revolution to the present.
The best way to explore the cemetery is through a Tourmobile sightseeing tram. Get tickets at the Visitor Center where you can also pick up a detailed map.
