The Goethe Institut, located on a corner of 7th Street in China Town, is a slice of Germany, transplanted. The institute, global in scope, states that the purpose of its 150 branches is the dissemination of German culture while DC's local institute specializes in promoting German film and language. The institute airs films every Monday, often filling its 92-person capacity. The turnout is surprising, given German cinema's chronic undervaluation by the U.S. public. These 92 guests recognize that German cinema produces highly regarded gems. The cinema house plays lesser-known films as well as films from the likes of lauded Bavarian director Werner Herzog.

The institute also prides itself in hosting art exhibitions in its airy second-story, each of which lasts approximately two to three months. The Goethe Institut also offers German language courses. Schedules and sessions vary in cost, length, and rigor. The institute's most popular session runs four times per year, lasts nine weeks, and costs $395. Class meets twice per week for a total of three hours.
