Originally opened in 1964 as the Museum of History and Technology, the National Museum of American History has become an important chronicler of the history of science and technology and its effects on the growth of American culture and society.
Among the collection’s highlights is the original 30 ft x 34 ft Star-Spangled Banner, the flag viewed by Francis Scott Key during War of 1812 and on which he based the national anthem.
Many of the pieces in its collection feature artifacts of everyday life, as well as such storied items as the desk where Thomas Jefferson sat as he wrote the Declaration of Independence. Pop culture is also represented by exhibits featuring such items as the ruby slippers from a Wizard of Oz.
The museum was the sixth Smithsonian building on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
