One of Theodore Roosevelt's greatest legacies was his dedication to conservation. Today, this island in the Potomac stands as a fitting memorial to the outdoorsman, naturalist, and visionary who was the 26th President. A 91-acre wilderness preserve, the island includes more than two miles of foot trails, a 17-foot bronze statue of Roosevelt, two fountains, and four 21-foot granite tablets inscribed with Roosevelt's thoughts on conservation.
The island was donated by the Theodore Roosevelt Association and is accessible across a bridge leading to a paved trail, as well as a bike path that connects Columbia Island to the banks of the Potomac facing DC from Virginia.
