- Description: Celebrated annually the last weekend in June, Safeway's Barbecue Battle challenges the hottest barbecuing teams in the nation in a contest for the National Pork Barbecue Championship title and $40,000 in cash and prizes. The event includes more than 30 national and regional bands across three stages, with more festivities than you could shake a rib at. Also included are cooking demonstrations, free food samples, all kinds of interactive cooking opportunities, and lots of neat stuff for kids. The event benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington's Metropolitan Police Club Houses.
