Amelia Earhart, known as “Lady Lindy,” was an aviation pioneer, and her fame extended far beyond her flying feats. In addition to setting aviation records, she founded a pilots’ organization for women called The Ninety-Nines, championed for the first commercial airline, was a member of the faculty at Purdue University and campaigned for women’s rights. A new exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, “One Life: Amelia Earhart,” will recognize her life and remarkable career with a special focus on her commitment to women’s rights.

On display inside the Donald W. Reynolds Museum, this temporary exhibition celebrates food at Mount Vernon and Martha Washington’s role as early America’s premier hostess.

Second Annual Guacamole Festival: May 1 - June 30, 2013

Richard Sandoval's vibrant Taqueria and Tequileria, El Centro D.F., introduces its Second Annual Guacamole Festival, the second of four quarterly festivals celebrating Mexican cooking. The Guacamole Festival will run May 1st through June 30th and will feature different flavors that highlight various regional experiences. Dating back to Aztec times, the traditional Mexican dip was comprised of avocado, onion, chilies, fresh tomato, and salt. Over time, regions of Mexico began mixing local ingredients, creating thousands of variations.

The Evolving Universe is on display at the National Museum of Natural History through July 7th, 2013. Breathtaking full-color photographs of the cosmos, taken by high-powered terrestrial and orbiting telescopes, take visitors back through time to the beginning of the universe. The exhibition, a collaborative effort with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory at Harvard University, explores how the stars, galaxies and universe undergo the same stages as life on Earth: from birth, to maturity and, eventually, to death.

NoMa Summer Screen: May 22 - August 21, 2013

Now in its sixth year, NoMa Summer Screen will run on Wednesday evenings May 22 to August 21 on the Loree Grand Field at Second and L Streets, NE. The event starts at 7 p.m. with music, giveaways, family fun, food vendors and picnicking. Films start at dark. Subtitles are provided for all films. Children and friendly dogs are welcome. Last summer’s theme, Is 2012: The End of the World, spoofed doomsday prophesies marking the end of the Mayan calendar, and featured blockbuster films that dealt with world-ending scenarios. All movies were shown at the Loree Grand field, at 2nd & L Sts. NE.

Titanic and Hindenburg served demands for rapid worldwide communication and transportation. Both operated as the world’s largest mobile post offices. Each in its day promised the fastest possible worldwide mail service. Each offered onboard gentility and opulence.
