Posted in: Holiday, Kids and Family, Upcoming Events

Bedecked in their bright holiday finery, the Smithsonian gardens are a welcoming destinations this time of year. Cindy Brown, a Smithsonian Gardens Education Specialist, will lead a tour laced with history and how-to’s through the Enid A. Haupt and Mary Livingston Ripley Gardens. Tours are set for December 7th, 9th & 10th, 2011.

During the walk, find out how climate change has affected the type of materials used for decorations. Learn about seedpods, evergreens, and colorful stems used in the unique creations adorning the gates and hanging from the lampposts. The tour will continue inside the Castle to see the oversized holiday tree that has been decorated by Smithsonian Gardens’ greenhouse staff. They have decorated the trees in the Castle and in the other museums for decades. Each year, the trees sport a different theme.

After the walk, you’ll retreat to the warmth of the Ripley Center and create botanical decorations inspired by those used in the gardens. After soaking up holiday cheer, take the completed natural masterpieces to decorate and begin a Smithsonian Gardens tradition in your home. For more information, visit: residentassociates.org
